How to read an e-liquid label: PG, VG and nicotine strength

A clear label-reading checklist for bottle volume, nicotine concentration, PG/VG order and device compatibility, including a worked example of what mg/ml means.

An e-liquid label answers several different questions. How much liquid is in the bottle? How concentrated is its nicotine? What is the base-liquid ratio? And will it work with your particular pod or coil? Reading those details separately avoids buying a familiar-looking bottle that is unsuitable for your device.

This guide is for adults who already vape or are moving away from cigarettes. It explains labels and compatibility, rather than giving a mixing recipe or choosing a personal nicotine dose.

Separate bottle size from nicotine strength

Millilitres, written ml, describe liquid volume. A 10ml bottle contains ten millilitres of liquid. That number does not say how strong the liquid is.

Milligrams per millilitre, written mg/ml, describe nicotine concentration. For example, 10ml of liquid at 10mg/ml contains 100mg of nicotine in the full bottle: 10 multiplied by 10. That is an amount present in the liquid, not a dose delivered by one puff or an amount your body necessarily absorbs.

Read the complete unit. If a retailer’s shorthand, a photograph or a label leaves the meaning unclear, ask for clarification before using the liquid. A large number on the front may describe volume, nicotine concentration or marketing information; the words beside it matter.

Read PG and VG in the order printed

Propylene glycol, or PG, and vegetable glycerine, or VG, are common base ingredients. VG is thicker. Innokin’s explanation of PG and VG describes how the two ingredients affect an e-liquid’s properties.

A ratio such as 70/30 is incomplete information until you know which ingredient comes first. A bottle marked 70 VG / 30 PG is not the same ratio as one marked 70 PG / 30 VG. Read the named ingredients instead of assuming that every manufacturer uses the same order.

That distinction becomes useful when you compare the bottle with your equipment instructions. A liquid that is too thick for a particular wick may not replenish it adequately. A ratio recommended for one tank is not automatically right for a smaller pod.

Compatibility is a check against the exact coil

Start with the full device and replacement-part names. If a device accepts several coils or pods, record the one actually fitted. Then check the manufacturer’s liquid guidance for that combination. Keep that information beside the bottle label when asking a retailer for help.

Vaporesso’s troubleshooting guidance identifies overly thick liquid as one possible contributor to a burnt coil. Innokin’s common-issues guide also links wicking problems to liquid suitability. Neither creates a single ratio that every device should use.

A practical shopping note might contain three lines: the device model, the pod or coil name, and the permitted liquid specification. This is more useful than remembering only the bottle colour or the brand family.

Nicotine form is another separate detail

You may see nicotine salts or freebase nicotine named on the bottle. That describes the formulation. The mg/ml figure still describes concentration, and the PG/VG information still describes the base ratio. Do not let one prominent label replace the other checks.

Likewise, a nicotine-free label does not make the whole product harmless or establish that it suits every device. It tells you about nicotine content; the rest of the compatibility and handling questions remain.

Know what the UK limits do—and do not—tell you

MHRA guidance for regulated consumer nicotine vaping products sets a maximum nicotine concentration of 20mg/ml, a 10ml limit for nicotine refill containers and a 2ml tank-capacity limit. Those limits concern the regulated products described in the guidance; they are not a recommendation to select the strongest option.

A compliant-looking bottle is still something to buy from a reputable retailer and use according to its instructions. Regulatory notification is not a personal suitability assessment or a promise of zero risk.

Your final label checklist

  • Read the bottle volume and nicotine concentration as separate measurements.
  • Check whether the stated ratio is VG/PG or PG/VG.
  • Confirm the liquid specification against the exact installed pod or coil.
  • Keep the bottle’s identity and instructions available for later questions.
  • Close and store it according to the label, away from children and pets.

If you are using vaping to stop smoking, take the label to a stop-smoking adviser or specialist retailer when discussing cravings. The NHS recommends getting help with an appropriate nicotine strength. Choosing that strength is a different decision from interpreting the units correctly.
